St John appoints Clinical Governance Lead

St John Emergency Ambulance Service has created a permanent Clinical Governance Lead role to focus on maintaining and improving patient care.

Aimee Lihou, who has been given the role, has been working in the area of clinical governance for three-and-a-half years on a part time basis.

She works closely with the Senior Management Team, as well as Health and Social Care, to ensure that service users are safe, and volunteers are aware of good practices.

“My day-to-day role involves monitoring standards of practice against set benchmarks, reviewing national best practices and making recommendation for local adjustments where necessary,” said Ms Lihou.

As part of the role, she sits on several national groups, including the National Education Network for Ambulance Services (NENAS) and a team who asses students on the new integrated paramedic degree apprenticeship.

“People ask me whether I miss working on the road as an operational paramedic and the answer is, I do,” said Ms Lihou. “However, I’ve devoted the best part of my life so far to helping others and view this role as the best way of helping in a more effective way,”

“By doing this I get to make decisions and implement change that effects all patients for the better, not just the ones I was treating at the time.”
