'Skipton Cup' created for Ravens and Green Lions

Skipton International has announced a new three-year partnership with Guernsey FC and FC Isle of Man which will see the two teams compete annually for the ‘Skipton Cup.’

Following the success of the Green Lions’ inaugural match in the Isle of Man, the first Skipton Cup match will be on 12 September at Footes Lane.

The respective clubs were keen to take advantage of the ever-strengthening relationship between Guernsey and the Isle of Man.

GFC Director Nic Legg hopes islanders will welcome the Isle of Man side, just as the Manxes did when the Guernsey team competed against the northern isle's newly-formed football team earlier this month.

“After the friendships we made in the Isle of Man we couldn’t wait to welcome the Ravens to Guernsey,” he said.

“This brand-new Skipton Cup is something we will all be able to look back on fondly in years to come as an oasis of sporting joy amid challenging times.”

FC Isle of Man Commercial Manager, Ty Smith, is excited that the Ravens will continue to compete with the Green Lions.

“Setting this Cup up as an integral part of both clubs’ pre-season preparations for the years to come will not only provide both sets of supporters with a ‘Crown Dependency Derby’ to look forward to, but will provide both islands with shared economic benefits,” he said.

“With a bit more at stake this time in the inaugural Skipton Cup, it promises to be an exciting game for both sets of fans.”

Jim Coupe, Managing Director of Skipton International, said the bank "appreciates the complexities of sporting life on a small island".

“The annual Skipton Cup matches will ensure that the competitive edge between the two will endure, providing sporting excellence for fans across both Crown Dependencies," he said.

“We already have a number of savers residing in the Isle of Man, and look forward to welcoming some of them, and their friends, to Guernsey over the coming years.”

The gates will open for the Skipton Cup at 17:00 on 12 September, with live music and children’s entertainment before kick-off at 18:30. Tickets can be booked online at www.guernseyfc.com.
