Sixth form students gain "hands-on" experience at insurance event

Wednesday 16 October 2024

Local sixth form students explored Guernsey’s international insurance sector at the second Insuring the Future event earlier this month.

On 3 October, 43 students attended the half-day conference led by Guernsey's International Insurance Association and were introduced to the island's role in managing global risks and providing insurance solutions for multinational companies.

The students - from the Sixth Form Centre, the Guernsey Institute, Ladies' College, Blanchelande College, and Elizabeth College - were asked to tackle a case study simulating real-world challenges in insurance and come up with a bespoke solution.

Guided by professionals from local insurance firms, they then had to present their proposal to a panel of judges and the winning team comprised of students from Blanchelande College, Elizabeth College, Ladies' College, and the Guernsey Institute.

Returning keynote speaker, Deputy Mark Helyar, also spoke about his varied career path and how he ended up working in insurance, focusing on the ethical side of the industry and how it helps address global challenges.

Vidya Amey, Head of Futures at Elizabeth College, said: “The students thoroughly enjoyed this practical workshop, leaving with new knowledge and a drive to explore Captive Insurance and opportunities in Guernsey's financial services. We are grateful for events that broaden their horizons and reveal the many opportunities available to them.”

Adele Gale, Chair of GIIA, added the importance of appealing to and recruiting the younger generations.

“There’s a growing demand for Guernsey insurance managers to handle increasingly diverse and complex insurance structures. It’s crucial for us to invest in training and recruiting the next generation to continue driving these entities forward.

"Events like this give young people a valuable glimpse into the future of Guernsey insurance and how they could play a role in supporting global economies."

She also thanked all those involved in supporting the second year of the event, including industry sponsors SRS, WTW, AON, Davies, Utmost, Marsh, and Artex.

"This event wouldn’t have been possible without their knowledge and insight, and I’m so pleased we could build on the success of last year.”
