This year's Bill Green Award winner is the Guernsey grown 'Seaweed Food Co.'.
The award, first established by the Young Business Group (YBG) in 1996, aims to showcase Guernsey innovators, whose sense of entrepreneurial spirit is thriving.
The Seaweed Food Co., which started up in 2020, was highlighted for its success, going from strength to strength, since it launched, starting off selling seaweed as “sea vegetables”.
The firm has since expanded its range, which includes launching a special lube for cyclists.
The YBG says the Bill Green Award recognises Guernsey's most innovative entrepreneurs, and that the Seaweed Food Co. was selected from a strong field of finalists, but the judges were impressed by the Seaweed Food Co.'s commitment to sustainability, innovative approach to local resources, and high-quality products.
The announcement was made during the 2024 Digital Greenhouse’s Véyaon Awards.
There was fierce competition this year, with the YBG making a special note of Katie Inder; the founder of data consultancy Concise, Vic Holyoak; who is the innovator behind the healthcare solution C-Section UK, and the eventual winner, Naomi Tustin; the co-founder of the Seaweed Food Co.
YBG President, and judge on the evening, Rebecca Hale, praised the winners: “The Seaweed Food Co. is a shining example of Guernsey’s entrepreneurial spirit. Their dedication to sustainability and their authentic approach to business truly represent the values Bill Green held dear.
“The entire YBG council would like to thank all the entrants for their applications. We were extremely impressed not only by the calibre of applications received, but also the variety. The diverse range of applications is evident not only in the shortlist itself but extended beyond this to several worthy retail, arts and not for profit organisations. It’s clear to see that Guernsey continues to be a hub for innovation and entrepreneurial spirit. Long may that continue.”
