Norman Piette has funded and installed a life-saving defibrillator in its Showroom Department at Bulwer Avenue.
The electronic device was installed by the builders’ merchant inside the entrance to the store and can be accessed by staff and members of the public during normal working hours.
Norman Piette CEO Paul Rogers said the installation will help save lives as early CPR and defibrillation is essential for survival: "Following an incident with a member of staff we felt it was vital to make an important contribution to the health and safety of all our staff and customers.
"AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) are electrical devices that analyse the heart beat and administer an electric shock, if necessary, to try and restore a normal rhythm. They are specifically designed to be used by members of the public as well as first responders.
"The placement of AEDs in public places helps reduce the time delay between cardiac arrest and shock and can really help in the vital period before the patient can get to hospital. As a member of the local community it is very important that we do our bit and would call on other businesses to also look at installing these fantastic devices. Our company slogan is “helping build a better Guernsey” that is not just about bricks and mortar but also about responsibility and commitment to fellow islanders."
Jan Looijenga, Health & Safety Coordinator: "We have registered the machine with the Guernsey Public Accessible Defibrillator Programme and the Cardiac Action Group have trained staff on its use. It is one of those things that you hope is never used but you want it to be in tip-top condition if it is ever required."
