New Chief Inspector of Police

One of Guernsey's locally trained police officers has been promoted again, with Andy Hockey now having the title of Chief Inspector.

Having joined the force on 26 September 1994, Chief Inspector Hockey will shortly celebrate 24 years of service as a Guernsey Police officer, having built up considerable experience across a number of areas during that time.

Initially a beat officer, he moved to the Traffic Department and became a police motorcyclist in 1999, where he remained for four and a half years, occasionally leaving to gain experience in CID and to be a Tutor Constable for probationary officers.

In 2004 he became the Force Firearms Officer where he assisted with firearms training, legislation, licensing security checks and general enquiries, before moving to CID in 2007 to become a Detective Constable dealing with serious criminal cases.

Promoted to Sergeant in 2009, Chief Inspector Hockey became an operational shift Sergeant until being seconded to the Professional Standards Department in 2013. During this time he undertook duties as an Acting Inspector and was promoted to Inspector in November 2014, and began operational duties at that level until January 2016, when he returned to the Professional Standards Department as the Detective Inspector – where apart from a three month stint to be Detective Inspector of Crime and Acting Chief Inspector of Crime, he has remained.

In September this year he passed the application process for promotion to Chief Inspector and will move into a new role in Crime Service, but will likely hold a far wider portfolio.

During this varied career, he has received five Commendations, nine ‘Acknowledgements of Good Police Work’ and in 2006 received the Chief Inspector Mauger Award for Outstanding Achievement.

Commenting on his promotion, Chief Inspector Hockey said: “I look forward to taking up this position as Chief Inspector in what I know will be a challenging and rewarding role within Guernsey Police and across Law Enforcement as a whole.”
