Leapfrog releases recruitment survey results

45% of Guernsey's working population could be in the market for a new job within the next year, according to a survey conducted by Leapfrog Recruitment Consultants.

The survey was completed by more than 200 people in the island earlier this year.

It explored factors which would tempt workers to apply for a new position, as well as skills they felt were most important and whether they had concerns about their jobs being made obsolete in the next decade.

67% of those surveyed said they would move jobs for better pay, while half claimed increased flexibility was the most important factor at work. A better work/life balance was important for more than a third of the participants and 37% said better benefits would attract them to jobs elsewhere.

"Unsurprisingly, higher pay and better benefits were high on the list, but it was interesting to see such a strong reaction to a better work/life balance and increased flexibility," said Leapfrog's Associate Director, Laura Allison.

Almost half of the survey participants said flexibility was a key skill for employees, with people management, critical thinking and emotional intelligence also scoring highly.

Looking ahead, respondents were asked whether they were worried that their job could become obsolete, to which 75% said no.

"Positions are constantly evolving and automation and digital transformation will have an increasing impact in the next few years, so while it's good that the island's workforce is feeling positive, it's also good to be prepared," added Leapfrog Consultant, Marike Visagie. "That's why we encourage people to keep on top of their personal development and training, so they are always expanding their skillset."

54% of those surveyed worked within the finance and public services sectors.
