Guernsey Waste is seeking two temporary assistants to help run the reuse service at the Longue Hougue Household Waste & Recycling Centre across the summer.
The role will include identifying items that are brought into the facility that could be given a new lease of life through local charities and other organisations. The charity GO has been operating the reuse service since 2017, but that contract is due to end next month.
The temporary staff will maintain the service until more permanent arrangements are put in place. Applicants do not require any experience of waste management or reuse, as training will be provided.
Guernsey Waste will operate the service for the coming months and work directly with charitable off-takers. This will enable it to gather some ideas on how the service could evolve and test some options.
Guernsey Waste would also like to hear from any local businesses or charities who might be interested in taking items for repair and/or reuse.

Operations Manager Sarah Robinson said: “Ever since the centre opened in 2019, GO has managed the reuse facility on our behalf. It was encouraging to hear from so many interested parties when we recently went out for expressions of interest.
“However, as expected, there is not one party that can pick it up from GO like for like. We are therefore considering all the options for the future operation of the reuse service and, all being well, building on the success achieved to date.
“Inevitably there is going to be some changes and potentially some investment may be required, so that needs to be scoped out further so that we can take the service forward in the best way.
“As reuse is high up the waste hierarchy which underpins the island’s waste strategy, we want to make sure we progress with the best option and take this opportunity to make sure this is considered properly.”
