Governor becomes patron of Saffery Rotary Walk

Tuesday 14 August 2018

Lieutenant Governor Vice Admiral Sir Ian Corder has gone the extra mile by becoming patron of the Saffery Rotary Walk.

His Excellency is determined to complete the walk every year he is in office and with this new role he has now gone one step further in his support for the annual event.

His Excellency said: “The Saffery Rotary Walk is a fantastic event that supports an incredibly wide range of local charities and I would encourage anyone to participate in whatever way they can. The walk encompasses the whole community from all those who take part, to those who make donations and to the eventual beneficiaries.

"It is a marvellous showcase for the island to those who come from beyond our shores to take part. Its 20 plus year history is a testament to its longevity and shows the island’s passion for the walk has not waned. I look forward to stepping into the role of patron and will keep taking part in walk for as long as I am in office.”

The Saffery Rotary Walk is one of the island's largest fundraising events and has supported a number of charitable causes since its inception in 1998. Over the past 21 years a total of over £700,000 has been raised, with last year’s 20th anniversary walk raising a record-breaking £75,000 for 28 local charities and organisations.

Lisa Vizia, a director of Saffery Champness, who are the headline sponsor of the event, said: “We’re so proud to support one of the largest charitable events in the Channel Islands and we’re honoured that His Excellency has become the walk’s patron.”

Chairman of the Saffery Rotary Walk Simon Milsted said: “We’re thrilled that His Excellency has accepted the position of Patron. It was fantastic that he has undertaken to complete the challenge each year and now he is Patron there can be no better endorsement of the fundraising efforts of all the participants.”

Later this year the Lieutenant Governor will be hosting the presentation evening at Government House to celebrate the success of this year’s walk where the final sum raised will be announced and cheques will be awarded to the charities.

The 2019 Saffery Rotary Walk is taking place on 15 June. Registration opens in December.
