Golf clinic initiative helps young people

Wednesday 25 September 2019

A group of young people have had their first taste of playing golf thanks to a new initiative organised by the Royal Guernsey Golf Club in conjunction with the Youth Commission for Guernsey and Alderney.

Sponsored by Altair, the first in a series of ‘Altair Charitable Coaching Clinics’ took place on 7 September with eight young people, aged between ten and 17, taking part in an hour-long golf session at the Royal Guernsey Golf Club, led by the Club’s Professional James Browning.

It's aimed at reaching out to young people who haven’t had the opportunity to play golf before but who are interested in trying a new sport. The Clinics  are running on Saturday mornings for six weeks throughout September and into October and form part of the Youth Commission’s ‘Get Active’ strategy.

As well as the new Clinics, Altair’s three-year sponsorship deal also aims to enable the Club to deliver a full series of competitions for juniors of all levels throughout the season, with a number of competitions having already taken place.

Kellie-Marie Le Prevost, Community Youth Worker at the Youth Commission for Guernsey and Alderney, said: “The Youth Commission would like to take this opportunity to say a special thank you to Altair for funding this golf series, as part of our Get Active strategy. Without this kind sponsorship we would not be able to make this opportunity possible. The young people are extremely lucky and we are looking forward to it getting going.”

Alice Hurford, Lady Captain of the Royal Guernsey Golf Club, added: “Unless they already know someone who already plays, it can sometimes be difficult for young people to access golf. As part of our junior programme, we are determined to give as many young people as possible the chance to have a go and introduce the game of golf to a new generation.”

Michel Davy, Managing Director of Altair’s Guernsey office, commented: “Our aim through our sponsorship is to break down barriers and give as many young people as possible the chance to try golf. I’m delighted to be working with the Royal Guernsey Golf Club and the Youth Commission to achieve this, and look forward to seeing local young people make the most of this opportunity over the coming weeks.”
