Fish and chip shop award winners to take over Cobo Chippy

Monday 18 July 2022

“Best fish and chip shop” award-winners, Sarah and Rui Rentroia, will be taking over Cobo Chippy from August.

The couple, who met working at the Rockmount in 2013, purchased Cobo Chip Shop from R W Randall Ltd. and will “relaunch” it as Cobo Chippy next month.

Mrs Rentroia said she was a regular visitor to Guernsey during her childhood. The couple both have “a great affection” for the island, with fond memories of eating fish and chips on the slipway at Cobo and watching the sunset.

The Cobo Chippy will be a family owned, managed, and run business with Mrs Rentoria’s father, who is a chef, working alongside the couple and supporting them.

Mrs Rentoria said they “snapped up the opportunity” to manage the local establishment.

“We have years of experience of running a fish and chip shop in Newbury where we worked hard to develop the business, to refine a consistent high-quality product and to provide excellent customer service,” she said.

“This hard work paid off and we won the title of best Fish and Chip shop in Berkshire in 2019 and again in 2021.

"However, we are very aware of the long-standing history of the Cobo chippy, so we won’t be introducing any big changes - we want to continue to offer the community the very best fish and chips.”

The couple will continue to purchase Marine Stewardship Council certified fish and source supplies as sustainably as possible and ensure all packaging is recyclable.

Mr Rentoria added: “Sarah talks fondly of being on Cobo beach as a child and asking to sit on the slip and eat chips. To be part of this as a family and to be able to ensure the tradition of providing fish and chips at Cobo is continued is extremely exciting and we look forward to meeting and serving loyal and new customers as well as creating memories for families visiting the island on holiday.”
