Event to consider the shape of offshore in a post-Brexit world

Monday 24 December 2018

The impact of Brexit on the future of the offshore economy and the importance of understanding the potential repercussions on the local finance industry will be discussed in the island by one of the UK’s leading economic thinkers.

The GTA University Centre (GTA) is holding an event titled ‘The Future of Offshore in a Post-Brexit Economy’ in January with Dr Savvas Savouri. Chief Economist for Toscafund Asset Management, Dr Savouri holds a doctorate in Econometrics and Mathematical Economics from the London School of Economics.

Camilla Hobbs, Programmes Manager at the GTA, said: “As one of the leading economic commentators in the UK, Savvas regularly provides insights on a broad range of topics and we’re excited that he is coming to Guernsey to talk specifically about the challenges facing the island’s economy in the light of Brexit and the ways we might turn this potential threat to our benefit.”

The hour-long talk will be followed by an interactive panel session with Guernsey finance industry experts, moderated by James Falla, Communications Manager at Guernsey Finance.

“The shape of the future for offshore jurisdictions like Guernsey has never been more uncertain than it is today as Brexit continues to dominate the political and economic conversation,” said Dr Savouri.

“Understanding and adapting to the implications of exiting the EU, in whatever form it may take, or dealing with matters if exit is delayed or indeed reversed, will be vital to ensure the offshore community can continue to thrive. Thrive too by developing strategies to capitalise on China’s ever growing need to have financial hubs in the western hemisphere.”

After the talk, attendees will have the chance to discuss the key topics debated with Dr Savouri and the other delegates over networking drinks.

“Much of our work over the past two years has been focused on ensuring that financial services in Guernsey is well-positioned for the future once Britain leaves the EU. At this important time this is an ideal opportunity to hear from a leading thinker on Brexit and the offshore dimension who knows Guernsey well,” said Dominic Wheatley, Chief Executive of Guernsey Finance, which is sponsoring the event.

Dr Savouri will be speaking at St Pierre Park Hotel from 16:00 on Thursday, 17 January 2019 with the event scheduled to close at 19:00. Full details and how to book are available here.
