Bursary laying the foundations for career in construction

Tuesday 05 October 2021

A student from Guernsey is laying the foundations for a successful career in construction thanks to financial support and workplace experience from Channel Island consultants, HLG Associates.

20-year-old Jack Le Tissier receives an annual grant of £1,500 from HLG while pursuing his dream of becoming professionally qualified.

Jack, a former pupil at Elizabeth College, is studying Construction Management at the University of Reading. As part of the bursary arrangement, he also receives a paid work placement at HLG during the holidays.

Jack has already been involved in a significant project in Guernsey, assisting in the project management of the construction of a new electricity substation at Beau Sejour Leisure Centre, which will soon be supplying a quarter of the island’s power.

“I am the only one of my friends doing this kind of work. I spend every day of the week loving my job,” said Jack.

“I like being on-site, the variety and the fact that each day is different.”

HLG Associates has offices in Guernsey and Jersey. It introduced the bursary scheme this year to promote the industry and support students in both islands.

Guernsey Managing Director Andrew Morley says they’re keen to help the next generation build a successful career in the island.

“The future of a thriving construction industry depends on the availability of a ready pool of skilled local talent, dedicated to delivering high-quality work and strong personal professionalism.

“HLG is committed to helping develop this talent and future. We are proud to continue offering a bursary scheme for students like Jack, studying or commencing a relevant surveying or construction-related degree.

“We have seen great potential in Jack. His ability to understand challenges and willingness to find solutions is clear. He is already a valued member of the team, and we look forward to welcoming him back in the holidays.”

Jack is in his second year at university and is considering what to do when he graduates. HLG Associates offers the option of a job upon graduation.

“I would like to end up in Guernsey; I love the island, and HLG offers me the opportunity to enjoy island life whilst still broadening my career horizons by contributing to the wide range of projects they are working on.”
