A local technology firm has helped Guernsey's St John Emergency Ambulance Service in a critical operation, by providing a free recycling of computer equipment and secure data destruction service.

Galaxy CI normally provides this service for the corporate sector, banking organisations and data centres, but the company volunteered to carry out the work for the St John Emergency Ambulance Service as part of its commitment to the local community.

Where possible parts from the old computers will be stripped and recycled, whilst all hard drives and materials that cannot be recycled have been "securely and safely destroyed" and were then shredded on site.

St John Emergency Ambulance Service Chief Officer Ali Marquis said “We are extremely grateful to Galaxy CI for offering their services. This will help us meet our GDPR commitments. It is also good to know that the reusable parts and materials will be recycled and not simply thrown away”.

Stuart Moseley from Galaxy CI said “We are delighted to be able to help the St John Emergency Ambulance Service by clearing and recycling their old IT equipment. As computers go out of date and technology advances lots of IT equipment becomes obsolete, our philosophy has always been to fit with the reduce, reuse, recycle approach. Our work normally happens in the corporate world, so it is also good to have the opportunity to show the public what we do through the local media”.

Galaxy; which has offices in both Guernsey and Jersey, is one of the recipients of the Keep Guernsey Green Award and the firm also said it operates a "zero-to-landfill policy" and has achieved accreditation against ISO 9001 Quality Management, and ISO 14001 Environmental Management.
