While more boards than ever are implementing generative AI into their businesses, executives are becoming more concerned over the risks and scaling up the technology, a new report has found.

A Deloitte report, which surveyed over 2,700 directors and executives in 14 countries, showed that 67% of respondents are investing more into generative AI but while its impact is expected to be large there are growing concerns.

Data, scaling, and risk are said to be limiting options and “tempering leadership enthusiasm”. 

Many said they were looking to improve data governance, data security, and updating policies to ensure investment into data management with AI was effective. 

Regulatory gaps and lack of internal governance models for AI are continued concerns, with at least two-fifths of respondents saying internal audits on Gen AI tools are regularly carried out. 

But more than half said investment will continue into the technology to improve efficiency and productivity. 

Over a third said they were tracking changes in employees’ productivity as a result, with just 16% producing reports for CFOs on the value being created by Gen AI, but more are using key performance indicators to evaluate its effect. 

“Survey respondents say that while their senior executives and board members are still intrigued by Gen AI, there are signs of enthusiasm beginning to wane as the ‘new technology’ shine wears off. Interest remains ‘high’ or ‘very high’ among most senior executives (63%) and boards (53%); however, those numbers have declined since the Q1 2024 survey, dropping 11 percentage points and eight percentage points respectively,” the report says. 

Deloitte’s Lead Advisory Partner in Jersey and Guernsey, Adam Cichocki, said simple wins over productivity were being extended in the eyes of executives to innovation, improved products, and better customer relationships. 

“Innovation was a topic that Simeon Moss and Emma Shirreffs presented on at the recent IoD Jersey’s ‘AI Powered Productivity, Strategising for Success’ event sponsored by Deloitte, citing it as one of the main catalysts for business growth in the world of Generative AI. The latest survey results show that there is immense potential and versatility of this transformative technology.”
