3,000 Guernsey homes have access to fibre

Wednesday 13 July 2022

More than 10% of Guernsey properties can now connect to fibre broadband.

All parishes have fibre equipment installed and each month another 700 homes are able to connect to the new network. 3,000 homes in total have access to fibre.

Guernsey’s fibre network is the fastest in the Channel Islands and offers islanders ultra-fast speeds of up to one Gigabit per secondover 60 times faster than today’s basic broadband.

There are five speeds to choose from - the lowest is 30 Megabits per second, which costs no more than the current basic broadband option.

Sure Guernsey Chief Executive, Justin Bellinger, said: “The availability of ultra-fast speeds, free installation and greater reliability are just some of the reasons to switch to fibre.

“We’ve had really positive feedback from customers who have upgraded, rating it overall 8.9 out of 10, the installation process 9.5 out of 10, and the speed 8.8 out of 10.

“This response shows just how much difference fibre connectivity is making to islanders’ lives. Working from home is slicker with fibre, streaming is buffer-free, and online gaming is enhanced.

Fibre can also support multiple devices on the same network with no loss of speed: perfect for the summer holidays when households’ younger users might be online more.”

The project represents an investment of £37.5m, £25m of which is coming from Sure with up to £12.5m provided by the States.

All Guernsey homes will be fibre-ready by the end of 2025 – with all properties having to be connected to the new network by the end of 2026.

It is free to switch to fibre broadbandSure will get in touch with homeowners to connect them to the new service when fibre reaches their area.
