Bailiwick Express Business Academy is your chance to make your idea a reality, or take your existing business to the next level. This is a unique opportunity to put your business in front of investors in Channel Islands businesses and achieve your dreams. Backed by some of the Channel Islands’ leading experts in start-ups and business development including, Carey Olsen, NatWest International, Sancus, Savills, Jersey Business, Envestors and Startup Guernsey.

STEP 2

The finalists

The applications will then be reviewed and narrowed down to the ‘Finalists’. Each finalist will be profiled in CONNECT and Bailiwick Express and readers will be asked to vote for their favourite. 

 

STEP 3

Finalists will be able to pitch their idea to the panel, with support from Envestors to hone their pitch.

Zef Eisenberg

In 1991 Zef Eisenberg founded the sports food brand Maximuscle, first as a publishing company focusing on the areas of fitness and sports nutrition.  The brand grew organically to become the largest sports nutrition brand in the UK, within 6 years. Having taken on private equity investors in 2004, the brand continued to grow each and every year, joining the Sunday Times, ‘Top 100’ most profitable and fastest growing UK companies.  Glaxosmithkline (GSK) acquired the brand in March 2011 making it the largest sports nutrition deal to this day.

 

David Williams

David has significant experience in the investment market. He has served as Chairman in executive and non-executive capacities for a number of companies, both public and private. He has built a reputation for creating significant shareholder value through both organic and acquisitive growth, as well as leading turnaround situations. David founded Marwyn, a business bringing talented management teams to AIM. During his 10 years as Chairman of Marwyn, more than £1 billion was raised for its investee companies. One of them, Marwyn Materials, went on to become Breedon Aggregates.  David was appointed to the Board in 2008.

 

Julie Coward

Julie started her career in banking, working with Barclays Bank, then ANZ. She then moved to the trust sector where she qualified as a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners. She was the first lady President of the Chartered Institute of Bankers in Jersey and has held various senior positions. Julie is now an interested investor in start-up and early stage digital businesses, and a business mentor.

 

Patrick Earle

Patrick started his career with 18 years in investment banks. The first 15 years were with J. P. Morgan in a broad range of finance roles including Operations Management, Corporate Finance, Mergers and Acquisitions Advisory and Equity. Patrick also spent 3 years at UBS as a Managing Director in the Equity Division and coordinator of Global Telecommunications Industry Research, in which role he was ranked 1st in the Institutional Investor for European Telecommunications. Subsequently, he worked extensively in the hedge fund management industry, including at Tiger Management, De Putron Fund Management and Kicap Management. He was joint Founder, CEO and CIO of Kicap Management. His particular investment specialism was global equities in the Telecommunications, Media and Technology industries. Patrick has a degree in Economics from Cambridge University and Diplomas in Company Direction and Portraiture.

 

Fiona Bateson

Fiona studied Economics at Durham University and started her career in the City, in commodity broking, the Eurocurrency market and Merchant Banking. She then did a modular MBA at Henley Management College, carrying out a range of projects at BT and Unilever. Fiona spent 10 years in management consulting with Harbridge House, and was a visiting lecturer at Henley Management College. She went on to set up her own management consulting business, specialising in finance organisations. Her specialism covers strategy implementation, through to leadership and culture change, working primarily with main boards and senior management teams.

Jennifer Strachan

CEO of Startup Guernsey, where she advises local start-ups, and created Guernsey’s first Blockchain Conference and Data Conference in 2017. She is an Angel investor investor with a technology-focused portfolio including investments in AI, distributed ledger technology, IOT and digital marketing companies.   Prior to this she worked for the Polygon Group, Heritage Group and in investment banking.

To get the ball rolling with your application, here’s a few things to check first:

If you’re over the age of 18 and your business is in the Channel Islands – YES!

Business Proposal Submissions

If you wish to submit a business proposal to the Bailiwick Express Business Academy, that submission is subject to the particular terms and conditions of the “Business Proposal Submission Agreement” sending us your submission indicates your agreement to those terms and conditions. You will not be able to submit any business proposals to us without agreeing to the terms and conditions.

 

Business Proposal Submission Agreement

Scope.This Submission Agreement applies to anything you disclose to Bailiwick Publishing as part of your submission.

Consideration and Acknowledgement. In consideration for Your agreement to be bound to this Submission Agreement, Bailiwick Publishing will allow You to share Your ideas us, You understand and acknowledge that: this Submission Agreement, as is more specifically described below, limits Your actual or possible claims, actions, and remedies in some situations and entirely bars Your actual or possible claims, actions, and remedies in other situations. You understand and acknowledge that You are voluntarily, knowingly, and intentionally entering into this Submission Agreement in consideration for Bailiwick Publishing allowing You to share Your ideas with Bailiwick Publishing.

Review Process Summary. Our review process may involve several steps. Business ideas will first be reviewed by the appointed panel. Many ideas will be rejected at this point without access to or review by anyone else at Bailiwick Publishing. Ideas are not shared with all Bailiwick Publishing employees or a large number of Bailiwick Publishing employees; just the opposite is true – access is restricted and limited. We’ll try, but we do not assume any liability or obligation, to keep You informed about our review process. You acknowledge and agree that regardless of the number of Bailiwick Publishing employees that may review Your Idea idea as part of this Review Process, Bailiwick Publishing will not be deemed to have general access to or use of Your idea if such idea is rejected.

If Bailiwick Publishing provides You with feedback, that feedback may not be comprehensive – and Bailiwick Publishing doesn’t assume any liability or obligation with respect to its feedback. 

Bailiwick Publishing finds that many submissions from outside parties: (1) are or were publicly available; (2) are similar to ideas developed by or in development by our own staff or others; (3) are not novel, unique, original, or concrete; or (4) are obvious. Likewise, in the future Bailiwick Publishing employees may independently develop or other parties may independently develop ideas that are similar to or may appear to be similar to Your Idea. 

Bailiwick Publishing’s receipt of Your Idea and any actions Bailiwick Publishing may take related to Your Idea: (1) aren’t an admission of Your Idea’s novelty, uniqueness, originality, concreteness, or non-obviousness; (2) aren’t an admission that Your Idea is protected or protectable by IP Laws; (3) don’t mean that Bailiwick Publishing has reviewed its records to determine whether it has seen, developed, or acquired rights to ideas that are similar to Your Idea; and (4) don’t create any liability or obligation between You and Bailiwick Publishing, except as provided by this Submission Agreement. Bailiwick Publishing disavows any obligation to inform You of the existence of any of the above at any time (e.g., to inform You at any time that it or another company worked on a similar item), and Bailiwick Publishing’s failure to so inform You doesn’t constitute a Bailiwick Publishing waiver of any kind or create any Bailiwick Publishing liability or obligation to You. 

Miscellaneous. This Submission Agreement is effective from the date You send your application and it continues in effect until You, an officer of Bailiwick Publishing, and a lawyer of Bailiwick Publishing physically sign another written agreement that expressly references and modifies or terminates this Submission Agreement. 

Bailiwick Publishing may provide You with confidential or proprietary information related to Bailiwick Publishing’s business or Bailiwick Publishing’s partners, including information about current and future Bailiwick Publishing ideas. You must not use or disclose that information for any reason, except as required by law.

This Submission Agreement is governed by and must be construed in accordance with Jersey law, without regard to its conflict of laws doctrine. If a court of competent jurisdiction finds any provision of this Submission Agreement invalid or unenforceable, then it is the parties’ intention that the court enforce: (1) such provision to the maximum extent permissible; and (2) the remaining provisions of this Submission Agreement. The failure or delay by either party to enforce any provision of this Submission Agreement will not constitute a waiver of that provision or any other provision.

This Agreement must be construed as if the parties had drafted it jointly if an ambiguity or a question of interpretation arises.

Bailiwick Publishing may immediately suspend or terminate the availability of the BAILIWICK EXPRESS Business Academy (and any elements and features of them) for any reason, in Bailiwick Publishing’s sole discretion, and without advance notice or liability. Bailiwick Publishing reserves the right to: change terms and conditions for the BAILIWICK EXPRESS Website or portions of the BAILIWICK EXPRESS Website; and restrict access to the Website.

Your access and use of the BAILIWICK EXPRESS Website is at Your sole risk. The BAILIWICK EXPRESS Website is provided on an “as is”, “as available”, and “with all faults” basis.

“You” and “Your” means the: (a) party identified in the BAILIWICK EXPRESS Website’s “Business Academy” form; (b) the party that sign the application form submitted to Bailiwick Publishing, as well as all related entities (e.g., corporations, partnerships) and others acting on Your behalf (e.g., employees, agents). If You are acting on behalf of others, then the term “You” and “Your” also includes all those parties.
