Q&A with Matt Armstrong

Q: Why did you initially choose to train with Deloitte Guernsey?

A: I initially moved to Guernsey in my teens and joined Elizabeth College Sixth Form. During that time, I got really settled and involved in island life, especially in rugby. I then moved away to the University of Exeter to study Business, Management, Marketing and Related Support Services. Upon completing my degree, Guernsey was the ideal location to begin my career as I had already built foundations in both my social and rugby life, so it made my transition into work life a little bit easier. Also, Guernsey in the summer is hard to beat!

Q: How has Deloitte supported you with progression in your career?

A: Deloitte provided great support for my accountancy qualification exams by providing time off for study. Our managers also ensured that we were able to study alongside our client work. As well as this, the People Leader and coaching system and proximity to the partners and directors have allowed me to have very honest and useful conversations about my future career. Outside of Deloitte, I play rugby for Guernsey which is quite a large commitment and my managers have always been very accommodating to help me pursue this alongside my day-to-day work.  

Q: What stands out to you about Deloitte’s team orientated culture and its work within the community?

A: Deloitte is very much a close-knit community, everyone in the office is friendly and approachable which gives the office a great atmosphere. The same is true across different Deloitte offices, our recent audit technical training programme with Jersey, Isle of Man and Gibraltar colleagues showed how close we are as an international firm, giving us the opportunities to interact and connect with so many different people across the world.

Q: Is there anything you would say to graduates and school leavers who are beginning to think about where they should start their future career and why Deloitte is a great choice?

A: I would highly recommend Deloitte as a great place to start your career. Deloitte not only offers great support in terms of exams and career progression, but it is also one of the strongest brands worldwide and working for the firm really does help you to stand out.
