Deloitte is the largest accountancy firm in the world. In the Channel Islands, Deloitte offers a market leading salary with benefits as well as globally recognised qualifications.
Hear from Sammy Parr, Consultant for Deloitte UK. Sammy began his career in Guernsey at the age of 18.
Q: Why did you choose initially to train with Deloitte Guernsey?
A: Deloitte offered one of the best and most competitive university summer programmes on the island with good financial incentives and strong links with the wider Deloitte business around the UK. I knew that a big corporate firm was where I wanted to take my career and so stepping into that space in Guernsey was the most sensible move for me at the time.
Q: How has Deloitte supported you with progression in your career?
A: Deloitte Guernsey has one hundred percent opened the door to my future career in Consulting in London. Whilst I was working, I built up invaluable skills that I have taken forward, including a great understanding of a professional services world; particularly in how to network effectively and present yourself in a large organisation. They also offered fantastic support and advice when I was looking to move to the London office, helping me speak to the right people and supporting me in conversations with the senior consulting staff.
Q: Where are you now compared to where you started your role at Deloitte?
A: I now work in London in Consulting sat in the Capital Markets Operations Transformation department. My focus is on digital transformation at investment banks, looking at how technologies including blockchain and cloud can transform an investment bank’s operations function. This is a world away from the predominately real-estate fund focused audit work that I completed during my early years at the firm. It shows how Deloitte Guernsey can offer you flexibility to take your future career forward as you see fit.
Q: How has Deloitte Guernsey prepared you for working in London/elsewhere?
A: Deloitte Guernsey taught me how to operate in a professional environment from a very young age which put me in a strong position when I started my career post-university. Particularly in how to build strong relationships with other professional colleagues and how to network effectively, both of which are integral skills in my industry.
Q: Is there anything you would say to graduates and school leavers who are beginning to think about where they should start their future career and why Deloitte is a great choice?
A: Deloitte is a great place to start your career, it has amazing people throughout the Guernsey and London offices, with fantastic learning and development opportunities that will set you up for future life. If you had told me when I was 18 and leaving school applying for a summer programme that in 7 years’ time, I would be sat at an investment bank offering blockchain advice I would have probably laughed at you – but it shows the wonderful doors and opportunities that are opened by joining Deloitte.
