Watson then went on to play in the mixed with Joe Salisbury, where they fought back in the second set against the Canadian duo of Gabriela Dabrowski and Felix Auger-Aliassime to take the game to a tie-break where they lost. The match finished 7-5, 4-6, 10-3.
Watson and Boulter booked their spot in the second round with a dominant display that lasted in an hour and 29 minutes.
Two breaks of serve and seven winning shots helped them clinch the first set 6-2.
In the second set their first serve success percentage was 96% and they continued to attack their opponents.
5-3 up with a break in the second, a forehand from Boulter set up match point, before Watson, in her fourth Olympics , hit a clean backhand winner.
In the next round, they will take on Brazilian duo and sixth seeds Beatriz Haddad Maia and Luisa Stefani.
That is scheduled as the third match on Court 6 today. The winners go on to play Italy’s number three seeds Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini in the quarter finals.
