WATCH: Guernsey FC snatch dramatic late win

Thursday 02 January 2025

A battling performance in torrential rain and high winds ended with Guernsey FC grabbing a dramatic winner deep into added time against Sutton Common Rovers.

They overturned a two goal deficit on the way as the wind gusted up to force eight and a downpour left pools of water on the pitch in the second half adding a whole new element to the game as the ball held up.

The result leaves the Green Lions four points from safety, but with games in hands and results starting to turn their way.

Rovers opened the scoring at Footes Lane in the 22 minute, Daniel Pepple nodding the ball into an empty net after Darnell Bromfield's shot had rattled off the crossbar.

Pepple doubled their lead with five minutes of the half remaining, but the goading of the home fans came back to haunt him.

GFC clawed one back before the break through a Matt Loaring penalty after Charlton Gauvain was clumsily bundled over in the box.

They were level within five minutes of the second half, Jacques Cauvin's shot from distance was only parried by the keeper and Sam Murray beat his marker to the ball to force it home.

Murray was on target again as Guernsey took the lead from a scramble inside the box.

Rovers hit back, though, Pepple striking the ball cleaning into the top left corner of the goal with 80 minutes up.

But having been on the end of their own late losses this season, GFC flipped the script and came up with the goods.

Deep into injury Loaring rose highest to meet a Dave Merris cross, nodding home and sparking wild celebrations from the whole team a he ran and slid to his knees in front of the benches.

The Green Lions travel to face mid-table Southall on Saturday.
