Team Guernsey urged to aim high at Island Games

Tuesday 20 June 2023

Guernsey’s athletes will embark on a lifechanging journey when they take part in the Island Games next month.

Team members gathered at Beau Sejour for an official ‘send off’ last night, the first time their kit has been on display.

Guernsey’s flag bearer was also confirmed as swimmer Tom Hollingsworth, who will be trying to take his Games’ medal haul from 47 to 50.

Lt Gov Lt Gen Richard Cripwell will be among the 1,200 volunteers, helping out as a car park attendant.

“We're going to show off our islands and our Bailiwick, we're going to show off all the things that we can do and all the people that come here are going to see what being from Guernsey really means," said Lt Gov Cripwell.

“And the tip of the spear is all of you, everybody in this room representing your sport, representing the island. I have no advice for you, you all know exactly what you've got to do. I'm absolutely certain that every single person in this room will leave nothing behind.”

He joked that with a team of about 300 athletes and more than 500 gold medals on offer, that was nearly two each.

"That's okay, because when you run a home Games, we want to be at the top of the board. We nearly were in Gibraltar. So when you're out there, you want to knowthere's 63,000 people behind you, there's 1,200 volunteers right behind you, willing you all to do your very best for yourselves and for our community.

Bailiff Sir Richard McMahon said that sport was a great unifier.

“You understand that because you will participate in your respective sports, you have that rivalry with whoever you are competing against,” he said.

But ultimately, at the end of the day, you end the competition. And then you get together. And you share your thoughts and reminiscences about that. No one can ask anything more of you than that you go out, and you perform to the best of your ability. If you do that, you can be proud of yourselves."

Guernsey Island Games Association president Brian Allen announced that Hollingsworth would be the island’s flag bearer at the Opening Ceremony.

Catherine Bonsall and Hannah Kennedy will be the water carriers and the oath takers will be Andy Torode and Karina Bowie.

“What makes a good Games without doubt is the competition and the fair and high quality of you the athletes,” said Mr Allen.

“You are all ambassadors, ambassadors for Guernsey, ambassadors for your sport. We know you will try your very best. Aim as high as you can and take from the Games everything that you can. The whole experience, it is life changing. It is a legacy."

“As you stand on the precipice of these momentous Games, I implore you to embrace the extraordinary opportunity,” said Leon Steyn, CEO of Utmost International Guernsey.

“Remember that you're not only representing yourselves, but also the island of Guernsey. Your dedication and hard work brought to this stage and it is this moment that your true potential will shine through. Believe in yourself, harness the passion that resides within you, and let it propel you forward to achieve greatness.”
