Sporting Achievement Award winners announced as Island Games legacy shines

Friday 12 January 2024

An outstanding year was celebrated at the Guernsey Sports Commission's achievement awards.

Premier League footballer Alex Scott scooped the top prize of the evening held in the Beau Sejour theatre, but elsewhere the legacy of the Island Games was clear.

It was the 21st awards evening.

“I'm sure that this year will go down as one of the most outstanding in Guernsey sporting history,” said Guernsey Sports Commission operations director Graham Chester.

He praised the work of all of those involved in hosting the Island Games.

“It was a spectacle that will live long in the memory and the size of some of the crowds at a number of the venues are something to behold and to see so many islanders going about their business with huge smiles on their faces shows to me the power that sport has to bring a community together.”

He said just to get a nomination at the awards was victory in itself.

“The breadth of talent across a whole host of sports for such a small island is something we should all rightly be proud of. And I thank not only the nominees but all the support teams around them that have contributed to their success, be they parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, coaches, sponsors, school teachers, mentors, volunteers. All that support is key to anybody's success. We won't do anything on your own.”
