Rugby: Raiders ease relegation fears with Wimbledon win

Monday 29 January 2024

Seven tries from Guernsey Raiders saw off Wimbledon to make it back-to-back home wins.

The 49-21 result comes at a crucial juncture, pulling Raiders further away from the relegation scrap against a side that sat one place below them in National 2 East.

It was an impressive bonus point win for Raiders, with a strong showing in the opening periods of both halves proving key and there is a promise of more to come.

Restricting the visitors to three tries also prevented them from picking up any bonus points themselves.

Raiders put on 21 unanswered points in the first 15 minutes, with Ciaran McGann easing any opening nerves with the first try when the game was only four minutes old.

A penalty try for a high tackle in the corner on McGann and another try for Anthony Armstrong, with a conversion from McGann, gave the Raiders a healthy advantage.

Wimbledon showed signs they were up for the fight when they picked up a loose ball and Bradley Pinkham crossed and Regan Botham added the two points.

Hugo Culverhouse powered through his first try to extend the lead back out, with McGann again slotting the conversion.

Wimbledon had the final say in the half when Finn Hunt chipped over, collected the ball and scored. Botham again slotted the conversion.

But any hopes they harboured of a comeback were swiftly and decisively dealt with in a breathtaking couple of minutes early in the second half.

Raiders’ scrum half Sam Boyland scampered through straight from a lineout and only moments later Culverhouse got his second of the game after Callum Roberts scything run and pop pass put him in.

McGann converted both efforts and Raiders were in total command.

Another converted try with ten minutes to go from winger Ethan Smith took them to 49 points.

Wimbledon’s late try from Tomasz Pozniak  was also converted.

Guernsey had a late chance to top the fifty point mark, but McGann’s penalty attempt was unsuccessful.
