Rugby: Raiders dig deep to win season opener

Monday 09 September 2024

Guernsey Raiders picked up a bonus point win to open up their National Two East campaign.

There will be much tougher opponents to come for Jordan Reynold’s as they look to get a foothold in the top six of the league, but they will take some comfort from being able to largely control the game against Worthing Raiders for some 50 minutes while down to 14 men having seen Tom Ceillam sent off after a scuffle.

Dom Rice crossed the try line with just two minutes on the clock, before Worthing came back with two successful penalties from Louis Ellis.

A Charlie Simmonds  try after some slick back play was converted by Ciaran Mcgann on 25 minutes as Guernsey stretched away again.

But after the red card incident, momentum shifted to Worthing as Ellis slotted a penalty and then had another opportunity to level the game which went wide.

Worthing came out of the blocks quickly in the second half, Bruno Perry’s try being converted to give them the lead.

But from then on it was Guernsey in control.

Mcgann’s try put Guernsey back in front just a few minutes, before Anthony Armstrong scored on 48 minutes for the bonus point try and Mcgann converted.

But sides went on to ring the changes, but the scoring was over and the game ended 24-16

Next up, Guernsey play Westcombe Park, who beat Bury St Edmunds 29-24 in their opening clash.

The game is at Footes Lane on Saturday with a 2pm kick-off
