Riders ready for first ever cyclocross inter-insular

Wednesday 24 January 2024

With interest in cyclocross growing, there is no better time to be holding the first inter-insular in the sport.

A Guernsey team will travel to Jersey for races at Les Quennevais on Sunday.

“This is the fastest growing discipline within British Cycling over the last couple of years,” said Guernsey Velo Club development officer Paul De Garis.

“From our first four race series in 20 years that we held last year, we have increased the number of races for the 23/24 race series and with that numbers of riders have risen.

“With both islands having this similar popularity with cyclocross there is no better time to have it's debut inter-insular competition.”

Guernsey domestic season has been held over varied and challenging courses.

On Sunday riders competed in a race at Vazon which included a visually spectacular beach section.

The feedback has been positive, De Garis said.

“We have had it all with the courses, tarmac, gravel, mud and sand, so perfect cyclocross conditions.

“With that we have seen some great racing throughout the age groups with some emerging talent coming through in Academy riders Charlie Tourtel and Zach Smith.”

It is hoped that the cyclocross inter-insular will alternate between the islands annually.

The competition will be incorporated into a big day of cycling at the Jersey Cycling Cyclocross Championships, with races for riders from four years old.

The Jersey Youth Cycling races take place from 9:30, before the Ladies, youth boys and men in the vet50 and older begin at 11am for about 40 minutes.

The senior men, vet40 men and junior boys will then race for an hour from 12:00.
