How to follow as Chalmers steps on to the European stage

Friday 07 June 2024

Alastair Chalmers will be aiming for the final in a key staging post of his 400m hurdles season at the European Championships in Rome.

He will also be hoping to secure the 48.70s Olympic qualifying standard as he faces his stiffest challenge since winning bronze in the Commonwealth Games in 2022.

Chalmers has taken over the Guernsey Athletics' Instagram page to give a unique insight into the life of an athlete at a major championships, while his races will be available to watch on the BBC Red Button, iPlayer and website.

The championships got underway today, with medals being decided this evening in the women's 20k Race Walk, men's discus, women's shot and women's 5000m.

Chalmers will be in action on Sunday in the first round of the 400m hurdles, which takes place from 12:20, while many of the top ranked athletes have progressed straight into the semis which take place from 11:40 on Monday.

Only the top two from those qualify for the final, which is scheduled for 20:05 on Tuesday.

The championships wrap up on Sunday.
