How and when to watch the Bailiwick’s best compete at the Paris Olympics

Friday 26 July 2024

Grab your remote, turn on your computer, swipe your phone, tune in the radio… it is time for a fortnight of the best sporting action at the Paris Olympics.

Gone, sadly, are the days of London 2012 where you could watch every event live from your sofa for free.

Instead, the BBC is restricted to two live feeds, all-day coverage on a network channel and a second stream on iPlayer called Olympics extra.

The BBC is offering some 250 hours of live coverage, but if you want more, there is almost 4,000 hours promised on Discovery+ and Eurosport. You can sign up for their Olympics offer priced at £3.99 a month until the end of the year.

From a Bailiwick perspective, all eyes will be on our trio of Heather Watson, Carl Hester, and Alastair Chalmers.

Opening Ceremony

Friday 26 July 6.30pm. It will be the first ever opening ceremony to not take place in an arena. Instead, athletes will take boats down the River Seine.

Heather Watson

The order of play for tennis is only available the evening before each day's play.

In the women's doubles, where Watson partners Katie Boulter,  first round matches are scheduled for Sunday 28 July from 11am.

The mixed doubles, where she plays alongside Joe Salisbury, takes place from Tuesday 30 July.

Medal matches in the mixed take place at 11am and 6pm on Friday 2 August and in the women's doubles happen on Sunday 4 August at 11am.

Carl Hester

On Tuesday 30 and Wednesday 31 July, The Grand Prix sees athletes split into six groups based on the FEI Dressage World Horse Rankings – three groups will compete on each day of competition, with the top two from each group, plus the six next best ranked combinations, qualifying for the individual final which takes place on Saturday 4 August.

After the Grand Prix, the top 10-ranked teams will qualify for the team final, which will decide the medals, which happens on Friday 3 August.

All the dressage events begin at 9am.

Alastair Chalmers

Athletics does not get going until the second week of the Olympics at the Stade de France.

The first round of the 400m hurdles is scheduled to begin at 9.05am on Monday 5 August, with another chance to qualify through a repechage round the following day at 11am.

The semi-final takes place at 6.35pm on Wednesday 7 August and the final on Thursday 8 August at 8.45pm.
