Guernsey hope to make home advantage count today in final of T20 World Cup regional qualifier

Wednesday 28 August 2024

Guernsey face Denmark this afternoon in a huge clash at the KGV.

Having sat waiting anxiously to see how other results played out in the last round of matches, the Sarnians made it through to the final in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Sub Regional Europe Qualifier C.

Their route to the final, which takes place from 15:30, saw them beat Bulgaria, Malta, and crucially Estonia on Sunday to top their group. They suffered defeat to Finland by four runs on Saturday.

They had to wait for the final round of games to play out yesterday with two teams still having slim chances of overtaking them on net run rate, but neither Finland nor Estonia could produce what was required.

Guernsey are favourites going into the final, but Denmark remain unbeaten in this tournament.

Their game scheduled for Saturday against Spain was abandoned because of the effects of heavy rainfall and they also topped their group thanks to vastly superior net run rate.

Spain themselves have just set a new record for the most consecutive men’s T20I wins.

They have won 14 on the bounce, dating back to November 2022, and beat Greece by seven wickets in their final group game at Port Soif on Sunday.
