Guernsey FC look forward to New Year’s Day knowing they can compete

Monday 30 December 2024

Guernsey FC were edged out by high flying Hartley Wintney, but head into their next fixture with added belief that they can compete with anyone in the league.

The latest visitors to Footes Lane are chasing a play-off spot, while the Green Lions are focussed on survival.

It took until the hour mark for Hartley to break through, when Seb Karczewski rose highest to head in a cross.

They made the win safe on 79 minutes when Conor Lynch finished form six yards.

Guernsey FC have Kevin Gilligan and Steve Sharman directing proceedings while manager Tony Vance recovers from a knee injury.

Gilligan told the club's media team after the game that his side lacked a bit of quality in the final third.

"We are trending upwards," he said.

"This was a bit of a free hit today, because they are pushing the top three this team," said Gilligan.

"But I thought we matched them really well. We can give anybody in this league a game now."

Sutton Common Rovers visit Footes Lane on Wednesday.

"They won't be as aggressive and as physical as this team today and we'll have a great chance of getting a result."

Sutton, who lost 1-0 to Hayes & Yeading last time out, are fourth from bottom on 19 points, having played four more games than the Green Lions.

GFC have 13 points and remain 21st in the 22 team Isthmian South Central league.

The game kicks off at 2pm.
