Football: New women’s tournament will help Guernsey develop its squad

Friday 23 August 2024

Guernsey are excited about the opportunity a new women’s football tournament will create for pre-season training and helping newer players develop.

The Cherry Godfrey Cup will see Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Wight and Isle of Man face off.

Due to be held every two years, the first instalment takes place today and tomorrow.

The first match – between Isle of Man and Isle of Wight – is at 17:00, before Jersey takes on Guernsey at 20:00 to decide the finalists.

The matches are being streamed on the Jersey FA YouTube channel.

An "opportunity to showcase individual talents"

Guernsey Captain Vicki Rang said the team was “really looking forward to having two consecutive days of football so early on in the 24/25 season and hope the biannual Cherry Godfrey Cup becomes a pivotal focus point for future pre-season training sessions, so that we can kick off the season competitively and do so right from the start”.

“As some of the first team regulars are unavailable this year, it provides a perfect environment for those who are hoping to make regular squad appearances, an opportunity to showcase their individual talents and ability to work as a team whilst gaining invaluable match experience,” she added.

“Whatever the outcome of day one brings, day two allows us a further opportunity to build, learn and develop on from our previous performance, albeit with some potentially tired legs no doubt!”

Bringing through the youngsters

Vice Captain Aimee Ogier said she felt honoured to be stepping up, adding that she was certain the weekend would provide a “great experience to enable us to improve our game”.

Anna Gauvain, Manager, gave huge thanks to Cherry Godfrey “for getting behind the women’s game and providing this opportunity for all four teams to get together ahead of Orkney 2025 Island Games”, and praised Jersey FA for agreeing for the inaugural match to be hosted at Springfield.

“This gives us another opportunity to test ourselves involving more of our talented youngsters who have come through the pathway, not forgetting the more experienced players who are relishing having more of these types of fixtures. We are all looking forward to a great weekend on and off the pitch,” she added.
