Entries open for Inter-Island Yacht Race

Friday 24 May 2024

Keen sailors can take to the waves for the annual Inter-Island Yacht Race between Guernsey and Jersey.

It will be held on Saturday 22 June.

Organised by Guernsey Yacht Club and St Helier Yacht Club, the event has been a popular fixture on the sailing calendar since 1964 – with entries for 2024's contest now open.

Martin Priest, Commodore of Guernsey Yacht Club, said: "As the largest race in our calendar this event is enthusiastically supported by a complete cross section of the sailing community, with entries and prizes for young sailors and family groups as well as the more serious racing teams. Such a large and diverse number of participants only serves to enhance the tremendous spirit of friendly inter-island rivalry which exists in sailing, as it does with most local sports.

"Last year was hugely enjoyable and – despite light winds making for some tricky conditions – everyone returned in good time. Entries for this year are now open, so we'd encourage anyone who would like to enter a crew to sign up as soon as possible."

More than 50 yachts took part in 2023, with Jersey's Rhys Perkins and his crew on Abracadabra taking first place honours. Crews from Jersey also won the Sir James Knott Trophy, which is awarded to the island with the highest finishing positions.

The race is sponsored by estate agents Savills for a third successive year.

Jeff Speller, Commodore of the St Helier Yacht Club, said: "Last year's event was a big success – bringing people together for a day of friendly competition and celebrating everything that is so special about our two wonderful islands.

"We are looking forward to this year's event with even greater enthusiasm and working with our colleagues at Guernsey Yacht Club and Savills to ensure a great spectacle and a memorable challenge."

Stuart Leslie, head of residential sales at Savills Guernsey, said: "Sailing is a favourite hobby of many islanders and several of us in the office have taken part in the Inter-Island Yacht Race in the past. It epitomises everything that is so great about our two islands and there's always a wonderful atmosphere. We're delighted to be involved once again."
