Cricket: Guernsey and Belgium share thrilling T20I series

Monday 10 June 2024

Successful run chases characterised Guernsey’s tour in Belgium as the sides won two games each.

It was the first time the teams had faced each other on the T20I stage.

Guernsey opened up with a win at the Waterloo ground on Saturday, having surpassed the 154 runs Belgium put on the board with 11 balls and six wickets in hand.

They then piled on the runs in opening the second match, finishing on 197/9.

The contest went down to the final over, but the hosts held their nerve to win by four wickets with just four balls remaining.

It was Belgium who seized the initiative on the second day.

Guernsey compiled a healthy 192/6 in their 20 overs, but again Belgium were up to the task and secured the win in the 20th over for the second time.

By comparison the final contest offered up a much more comfortable win for the men in green.

Their bowlers restricted Belgium to 125 runs and that target was seen off in the 15th over.

Matt Stokes was named Player of the Series.

He took six wickets at an economy rate of 8.5 an over, and scored 148 runs off 98 balls at an average of 74.

Harry Johnson was named Bowler of the Series.

He took six wickets at an economy rate of less than eight an over, bowling four overs in all the matches.

The sides are due to face each other again in Guernsey next year.
