Badminton: Le Tocq ready for European masters challenge

Wednesday 21 August 2024

Paul Le Tocq is aiming to make it deep into the tournament at the upcoming European Senior Championships.

He will pull on the England shirt for the event, which takes place in Belgium next week and attracts hundreds of the leading masters players.

Le Tocq will play in the Over 40s category.

“There’s 1,500 players from over 30 countries, the event has grown massively over the last few years and the standard is really high this year with players wanting to qualify for the world championships next year, so it will be really tough,” he said

“Even in the Island Games the draw would be a maximum size of 64, so to have double that in both men’s singles and mixed draws is going to mean lots of matches if you want to progress.”

He is targeting the top eight in each event.

“Any further than that I will be very happy with.”

He opens his singles campaign against Robin Van Landeghem from Belguim on Monday afternoon.

On Monday morning he plays with Kelly Fairey in the mixed against Germany’s Mathias Birkholz and Katharina Meyer.

Le Tocq partners with Alex Marritt in the men's doubles where they have a bye in the first round.
