ATHLETICS: Chalmers picked for European Championships

Tuesday 28 May 2024

Alastair Chalmers has been named in the GB & Northern Ireland team for the European Athletics Championships in Rome.

The championships, which are staged between 7 and 12 June, will also be a chance for the 400m hurdler to make a bid at Olympic qualification.

UK Athletics has announced a 70-string team for the Europeans, including reigning 2023 World Heptathlon Champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson, World Silver medallists Keely Hodgkinson and Matthew Hudson-Smith, and World 100m Bronze medallist Zharnel Hughes.

Chalmers, the 2022 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, has run 49.10 this season, quicker than he achieved all of last year, but shy of his 48.88s best.

The Olympic standard is 48.70.

Head Coach Paula Dunn said: “I am really pleased with the team we have announced today that will compete in the European Athletics Championships.

“It is incredibly strong with a high number of athletes feeling that Rome will form an important part of their preparations for Paris.

“For some athletes, winning a medal in Rome will be the perfect preparation for the Olympics, for others competing here will provide a benchmark as to where they are knowing that their peak performance needs to come at the start of August.

“There is also a good blend of athletes who can use this championship to step up and fuel their aims of qualifying for Paris and onto Tokyo World Championships in 2025.”
