Alderney rugby club invited to inaugural Scottish inter-island competition

Thursday 28 March 2024

The Alderney Ridunians have been invited to compete in the inaugural Scottish Inter-Island 10s Tournament.

They’ll join teams from ten different islands, including the Orkney Islands, Shetland Islands, and even a team from Iceland.

The Ridunians will be bolstered by some players from the Sark Shags. Express met with Alex Purdy, the Alderney club’s secretary to talk about the invite:

“[The Ridunians] have been going for just over five years now, so it’s quite a new club,” said Alex.

It's very much community and volunteer led... all our committee are all players, and of course, they work full time jobs as well. But everyone works hard and we are able to get a fair few fixtures each year.

The Ridunians will be going out to represent Alderney and the wider Channel Islands in May.

We're currently at the stage where we're desperately trying to fundraise to be able to afford this,” continued Alex.

Speaking about the invitation, the Alderney Rugby Club Captain, John House, said:

“Being able to travel away from home and represent our island on a wider stage means a huge amount to us at Alderney Rugby. It is amazing to see how far we have come since 2018, and the future is looking really bright for rugby here on Alderney. It is really important now that we can fundraise enough to take this golden opportunity.”

Ben Magell, the Sark Shags Captain, said he was thrilled to see a few of Sark’s players join the competition.

It’s an amazing opportunity to compete on an international scale. I’m very frustrated I can’t be there, but I have full faith those of us that are going will do us proud. Up the Shags!”

The Alderney Club is also developing an established junior section, which Alex says should be up and running “in the near future”.
