Last week, between 26 June and 2 July, Guernsey Police’s operational shifts took reports of 190 incidents, there were 43 recorded new crimes and 37 arrests were made.
Monday 26 saw the start of National Response Policing Week, and as a result we wanted to share the kind of calls for service our officers responded to. Our shifts are at the front line of keeping the Bailiwick a safe place to live and work, and need to be ready to respond to a huge range of potential incidents.
Throughout the week, officers attended a number of concerns for welfare incidents, various missing persons reports and a variety of different general crimes.
To highlight some examples, on Monday 26, response officers arrested a male who had been involved in a road traffic collision. Following the incident, he exited his vehicle and is suspected to have run away. Through enquiries he was located and arrested on suspicion of theft of a vehicle and possession of a controlled drug. Officers also attended an assault in progress, a mental health related incident, and made an arrest supporting Customs Officers with a report of theft on Condor all on the same morning.
On Wednesday 28 a 39-year-old man was arrested for making threats to kill. The incident was declared a firearms incident due to specific threats made with weapons. The man was subsequently located and arrested, and during the arrest, officers also located what they believe to have been a small cannabis cultivation.
Also on that day we received reports of three roads related incidents, two mental health response calls, two harassment reports, a report of criminal damage, two additional incidents relating to threats to kill, two stop searches were conducted, one domestic incident was reported, one arrest was made in relation to the possession of a controlled drug, and a missing person was reported.
On Friday 30, D shift conducted a drugs warrant whereby one 43-year-old man was arrested after being found in possession of what officers suspected to be Class A controlled drugs.
On Saturday night in Town, along with many of the usual incidents the shifts respond to, officers attended an alleged GBH – reportedly a glassing. One male was arrested and subsequently remanded in custody. There was also a drink drive arrest made – the female arrested provided a roadside breath sample of 68mcg.
Finally, on Sunday morning reports came in of an ongoing incident which saw the suspect flee from officers as they responded. He was arrested following that pursuit on suspicion of drink driving, assaulting two police officers, and dangerous driving.
All in all, last week was a busy one, and the incidents we’ve referred to above doesn’t cover everything the shifts attended, and it also doesn’t cover the work our other specialist teams carried out. Guernsey undoubtedly remains a very safe island, but that doesn’t mean our officers do not respond to a huge range of calls for service, all with the aim of keeping our community safe.
