'Zig zag path' gets a facelift

Saturday 01 June 2019

A neglected path leading from La Vallette, up the side of Le Val des Terres, is getting much needed TLC this weekend.

Volunteers are clearing it before carrying out a repair job on the damaged surface.

Organised by the group, the Art of Living, the volunteers will be working on the Upper Walkway (pictured above), which is opposite Octopus. It is the winding path which is open to the public and has been well used but some might say poorly maintained.

To counteract the damage, the volunteers will be using materials donated by Annandale and States Works to repair the damage surface where the 'hoggin' has worn away to leave a more slippery and rough granite base.

Organiser Andrew Pouteax said the repair work is being done in cooperation with the States Agriculture, Countryside and Land Management team which is responsible for the area. ACLMS has arranged for an area to be cordoned off so the volunteers can work safely.

The work is expected to take all weekend, with volunteers preparing the site for infilling during Saturday, while a team of workers, including the Community Service Team, will mix the 'hoggin' (a mix of granite dust and cement) and carry it to the areas needing repair on Sunday. The patches most in need of repair will be dealt with first.

Community efforts to restore La Vallettee started in 2014 with a number of volunteers being involved since then, both on an individual basis and through their employers.

Last weekend work started to weed the flower beds along La Vallette with the team pictured above giving up their weekend to do that.
