Islanders could save themselves a "small fortune" by cutting down on Christmas leftovers this year, Guernsey Waste has said.
With its Christmas Campaign, the Government waste team are offering some money-saving tips to reduce the cost of food this festive period.
It is estimated that more than £15m. worth of wasted food is currently thrown away in Guernsey every Christmas, costing the average family as much as £900 a year.
The Christmas Campaign is encouraging households to think about how they can reduce the amount of food waste and have provided "simple" and "practical" steps that can save money over the festive period.
Waste Minimisation and Sustainability Officer, Douglas Button said: “Back in 2019 we estimated the average Guernsey family was spending as much as £700 a month on food and drink shopping. Given food price inflation since then, the figure is now even higher. Too much of it ends up being thrown away, and it is costing islanders a small fortune.
“By cutting down on food waste, a typical family could save themselves around £900 next year, and possibly more. All it takes is just a few small changes, then you can think about what nice things to do with the extra money you’ll have to spend.”

Guernsey Waste’s website also contains an 'Ultimate Guide to Christmas food planning', including recipes to make use of leftovers.
The team has also partnered with some of the island’s top chefs, who have shared some of their favourite recipes which will feature in the 2025 LoveFoodHateWaste.gg calendar.
On the recipes Mr Button added: “We hope islanders agree we have chosen a great mix of family favourites from a warming winter soup, some tasty meat and vegetarian dishes, puddings with a local twist, fish dishes and recipes with a little bit of spice. Hopefully we’ve chosen something for everyone’s tastes.”
