30 bikes gifted in Sarah Groves' name

Thirty children will receive a new bike for Christmas this year, after the Sarah Groves Foundation and Ian Brown's Cycle Shop worked with local organisations to provide the gifts.

The charity has gifted bikes for several years, after it was launched following the murder of Sarah Groves in India in April 2013.

The Sarah Groves Foundation is focused on supporting projects that improve the lives of young people.

Miss Groves's parents said that they don't know which children receive the bikes, as that is all handled by the appropriate local authorities who ensure they go to those most deserving. They also said they would give more if they could.

"The people of the island are so generous in giving to Sarah's Foundation, and it couldn't happen without them," said Mrs Groves. "We have to spend that money wisely, and you know, 30 (bikes) doesn't even touch the surface. There are so many more children that are worthy of them but we have to draw a line somewhere."

Mr and Mrs Groves were delighted to see the new bikes on Friday morning, and it brought back memories for them of when their own children were learning to cycle.

"We lived in some quite hilly places at the time, and it was quite hairy," laughed Mr Groves.

"We lived towards the bottom of the Rohais de Haut, and Sarah did come off her bike right near the entrance," added Mrs Groves.

Both Vic and Kate Groves, and Sarah Groves Foundation Trustees Peter Morrey and Ken Acott, met Kay Lindsay; Manager of the Kindred Family Hub, and Teresa Bott; Manager of the Bright Beginnings Children Centre, at Ian Brown's Cycle Shop for the handover of the new bikes on Friday.

The bikes are distributed to families ahead of Christmas for the children to receive on Christmas Day.

This year's recipients are all aged between 2 and 9.
