Wind forces cancellation of bean jar celebration

Saturday 13 October 2018

The Bean Jar Jamboree may have fallen victim to the wind, but a number of events are going on at Les Cotils today regardless.

The Thrive 2020 conference is on all day, with The Unseen Creatives art exhibition, the Body and Mind tipis and refreshments will be available too.

The Bean Jar Jamboree itself was in its fourth year and plans were at an advanced stage when the organisers made the difficult decision of cancelling it earlier this week.

They said the weather forecast was too bad so they couldn't go ahead.

However, the other other events were able to be moved inside and are going ahead today.

The Body and Mind session is taking place this morning, while this afternoon's Thrive2020 conference will focus on mental health and wellbeing.

As part of the two events, a series of talks are taking place all day on a number of different topics from different inspiring people.

  • Zef Eisenberg, Guernsey’s own record-breaking (and bone-breaking) islander
  • Elis Joudalova from Jersey speaking on the impact of sharing food to bring people together
  • Gabby Ellmers from Jersey’s Beresford Street Kitchen, empowering people with learning disabilities
  • Sian Jones, artist sharing her Notes to Islanders
  • Phil Surry, founder of Guernsey’s Man Club
  • Mark Smith, co-founder of Men’s Sheds Guernsey
  • Hugh Rose, delivering Arts on Prescription
  • Rosie Williams, Guernsey’s youngest person to swim the Channel
  • Alun Williams, the man behind the Bailiwick’s Daily Mile success
  • Jorge Amorim, laughing yoga guru
  • Ollie Davies, professional actor and improv specialist
  • John Hibbs, inventor of the Hoffice: Offices for Happy Healthy Humans
