What a whopper!

Wednesday 11 March 2020

Guernsey Police are warning about tonight's high tide, describing it as a "whopper" which should be avoided if you can.

The Town Quay will be closed, while the west coast is also likely to be impassable.

After deciding to close the Quay this morning, the emergency services, supported by Civil Protection Volunteers, will also be manning key points this evening from 19:00 to ensure everyone's safety.

Guernsey Police said:

"We’re putting in place some measures to protect drivers tonight as the high tide is a whopper at 10.01m (at 8.10pm). The Quay, St Peter Port, will be closed between 7pm and 9pm tonight as there will likely be significant flooding.

"It’s going to be rather blowy too, so it is highly likely that a number of west coast roads will be impassable. As such please avoid the west coast, especially between 6.30pm and 9.30pm."

Civil Protection Volunteers will be patrolling those areas and any one  passing by is asked to heed any advice they are given for their own safety.

Similar plans are also already in place to close coastal routes tomorrow with a slightly larger high tide forecast at 10.2 metres at 0820.

The Quay will be closed for an hour either side of high tide, as it was on Wednesday morning, which caused significant tailbacks as motorists tried to drive into town and found they couldn't.
