The West Show is back

Wednesday 14 August 2024

For two days the L’Eree Aerodrome will be transformed into a melting pot of games, competitions, exhibitions, live music, food and drink.

The show opens at 10:00 today promising the best of the west.

Day time entertainment on the field includes an equestrian stunt team featuring Spanish stallions and daring tricks.

There’ll also be mountain bike mania with an aerial skill display from M.A.D Team which includes former British champion cyclists.

The acrobatics continue at the Madness Trampoline Wall with stunts and parkour returning after dazzling the crowd back in 2022.

And there’ll be a whiff of two-stroke fumes as chainsaw carver Peter Leadbeater creates wooden sculptures from totems to characters and animals.

As always, the modified ride-on lawnmowers will be tearing up the turf, with a quieter and slower affair offered through the display of vintage tractors.

Heats in the racing take place on Wednesday and Thursday afternoon before the finals on the last evening, with trophies to be presented at 19:45.

The exhibit tent will be loaded with baked goodies, arts and crafts creations, and the iconic harvests from vegetable patches and flower gardens out west. You can view the selection after 13:00 on Wednesday to see the winners and riders.

For the kids – or big kids – there's a selection of fairground rides, the bubbleologist Chloe Ferguson, and the livestock and animal tent, with judging taking place on Wednesday morning.

Family games are also being held in the tea tent on Wednesday at 18:30 before the bean jar cook-off judging takes place. Lashings of the island’s national dish along with bread and Guernsey butter can be savoured by the public after the winners have been decided.

As the sun starts to recede, the amplifiers in the beer tent will fire up with performances from Neon Fire and Stuck to the Ceiling ringing out on Wednesday before Ruby Rouge, Underdog, and Last of the Light Bridgae plug in and tune up on Thursday.

There’s also the meat draw and closing out festivities will be the auction of produce inside the tent. Expect shouting and flying corn.

As always refreshments, gifts and activities are available from the myriad stalls from traders, food and beverages and charity showcases.
