We're staying shut!

Monday 30 March 2020

A number of businesses beat the States to it, and decided to stay closed this week for the safety of their staff and customers, despite them being able to open under the guidance previously issued for the corona virus lockdown.

Gardeners, window cleaners and some construction companies, takeaways and other retailers were all on the list of jobs that could be done within the new measures imposed last week - but further guidance issued by the Civil Contingencies Authority yesterday now means they can't.

As confusion seemed to grow over who could open and what was classed as an essential business, the guidance was redrawn and tightened in some areas.

This included a crackdown on things like dry cleaners and window cleaners being able to open. Even mechanics can now only work if they are doing essential maintenance on key workers vehicles.

Many garages, like Le Mont Saint, had already decided not to open during the lockdown, saying it was in everyone's best interests to remain closed.

While some smaller constructions firms may have been able to open under the previous guidance - providing only two members of staff were on site, working a minimum of two meters away from each other, many have decided to close for the entire duration of the lockdown.

Wheelers, Geomarine, Channel Welders and others have all said they are putting their staff and customers safety first.

It's understood that all members of the Guernsey Building Trades Employers Association will be staying closed but a statement on behalf of all firms involved is expected to be released today, following the latest guidance being issued.

A new association has also sprung up during the corona virus pandemic.

The Guernsey Landscape Collective said it speaks on behalf of 'Guernsey's landscape professionals' including gardeners, tree surgeons and paving experts.

Its 42 members are all in agreement and have downed tools for at least the two week lockdown.
