WANTED: Volunteers needed now for the Island Games

Monday 09 September 2019

With the 2021 Natwest International Island Games being held in Guernsey, an army of people will be needed to run the huge community event - including a number of special volunteers, or 'Attachés'.

They will have the role of forming a direct link between the host island, in this case Guernsey, and all of the visiting islands.

The Bailiff, Sir Richard Collas, has already put his name down to take part. He was the first person to register his interest and said it is a vitally important role and one he will be pleased to get involved with.

“Over the years I have thoroughly enjoyed following Team Guernsey and promoting our island along the way as well as meeting many new people from the other competing islands. Within my role as The Bailiff I have had the pleasure of meeting many Attachés. As I am about to have a little more time on my hands, it is now my turn to reciprocate and help make our visitors to Guernsey feel really special.

“Attachés are one of the vital roles of any island games and I am really looking forward to learning a lot more about it.”

The 2021 Guernsey Games will be held between 3 and 9 July, but the Attachés will be needed before then to meet representatives from each competing island when they visit Guernsey next summer.

In total, the Guernsey 2021 organising committee wants to recruit around 80 Attachés who will be responsible for things like the on-island personal travel and transportation needs of various VIPs, team managers or medical support staff during the Games.

Guernsey Island Games Association’s (GIGA) Games Director, Jon Marley, said: “Attachés form a direct link between the host and visiting islands. In many ways they are the face and voice of the organising committee, transferring invaluable information to all island representatives. A good Attaché can be the difference between a smooth-running Games or one which is constantly playing catch up.

“Volunteer Attachés need to be self-driven, with the most up-to-date information at their fingertips. The days can be long as often you “live” the Games alongside your team manager witnessing exhilarating highs or disappointing lows.

“It helps if Attachés have a keen interest in spectating all sports as a lot of time can be spent at the various venues. However, this voluntary role has been described by previous Attachés as the most exhilarating week of their lives and many have asked if they can sign up to do it again at the next Games!"

Responsible for the recruitment and training of Attachés is Carla Bauer who said: “There are a diverse range of volunteering roles available, but if you are specifically interested in being an Attaché please register your interest now by logging on to: guernsey2021.gg/volunteer and ticking ‘other’ and add Attaché as appropriate.

“If you would like to talk through any part of the role before you register your interest, I would be very happy to do so. I can be contacted by email on carla.bauer@guernsey2021.gg; telephone 07781 127422 or via our generic email volunteer@guernsey2021.gg.”
