WANTED: Former apprentices needed!

Tuesday 29 January 2019

Guernsey's College of Further Education wants to track down some of the island's former apprentices to find out how well they're doing and to encourage them to join in with some celebrations that are being planned for this year.

2019 marks 70 years since the College of FE's apprenticeship scheme was launched.

From humble beginnings, with the first course approved by the States on 14 December, 1949, the island's College now offers apprentices in more than 15 different areas. Those include construction, engineering, hospitality and catering, hairdressing and horticulture.

At the most recent count, the College estimated that it has more than 500 registered employers on the scheme, with an average of 70 enrolments each year. That means, hundreds of businesses have benefited from the scheme, while thousands of former students have gone on to gain their qualifications with many making their career using their chosen apprenticeship. Many of those former students will have gone on to have extremely successful careers, many now with their own businesses and apprentices, the College said.

To mark the 'platinum anniversary' of the apprenticeship scheme, the College of FE is planning a number of events to celebrate the occasion, as well as an exhibition of old photographs and other memorabilia from over the past seven decades.

The College has also set itself an aim of 70 people, who started their careers as an apprentice in the Bailiwick, to represent an alumni.

Louise Misselke, Principal of the Guernsey College of Further Education, said anyone who has completed an apprenticeship with the College is invited to join in with the celebrations.

"Throughout the year we would like to celebrate the accomplishments of all past apprentices and I would, therefore, like to encourage them to contact the apprenticeship team if they would like to be a part of the anniversary celebrations."

Anyone interested in taking part should contact the apprenticeship team on 737500 or email apprenticeships@gcfe.net
