Hope fuelled walk for teen's mum and friends

Monday 15 May 2023

Around thirty teenagers turned out for a 'walk of hope' in memory of their schoolfriend who died a year ago.

Elizabeth Emily Borman lived in Jersey for the first few years of her life, before moving to Guernsey with her father, siblings and step-family members as a young child.

She attended St Mary and St Michael Primary School before progressing to the Grammar School. She was among the last cohort of students to sit the 11+ in Guernsey in 2018, meaning she would have been sitting her GCSEs this month alongside her friends.

However, Elizabeth moved back to Jersey to live with her mum in 2021. She died on 5 May 2022.

Natalia Borman said: "I used to call her Veta."

"I am Russian by origin and Elizabeth would sound as Elizaveta in Russian. Affectionate for Veta is Vetochka and that means small branch of the tree. My mother Ludmila named Elizabeth in honour of English Queen Elizabeth II because my mother adored her taste, ruling, strength, wisdom, outfits and her smile no matter what."

Ms Borman said she is concerned about worry, anxiety and depression in children and teenagers, saying "poor mental health in young people is concerningly on the rise".

With that in mind, Ms Borman organised Saturday's walk in Guernsey, and another walk in Jersey this coming Saturday, "to raise awareness of mental health in young people and to raise money for the Youth Commission in Guernsey".

Jersey's walk will raise money for a charity there.

Ms Borman found the event on Saturday emotional as increasing numbers of young people turned up ahead of the start time.

She was able to meet some of her daughter's friends for the first time. They shared memories of Elizabeth ahead of and during the walk.

Among the group walking were some of Elizabeth's primary school friends, secondary school friends and friends from sports and other clubs. They were accompanied by staff from the Youth Commission.
