Volunteers sought for next year's DofE groups

Tuesday 15 December 2020

The Youth Commission is seeking new volunteers to help Bailiwick students complete their Duke of Edinburgh expeditions.

Every year hundreds of young people gather into teams to plan for and execute an unaccompanied, self-reliant expedition.

From March to December the Commission provides practice sessions through its 14 licenced centres, and provides Expedition Assessors and Supervisors to ensure the expeditions are successful when they begin.

Assessors work with participants ahead of the expedition to review their plan, and perform a pre-expedition check ensuring it meets the 20 conditions necessary to be considered valid. During the expedition they meet with teams several times en route, and complete a report on the performance of each team member.

Supervisors support participants in developing the skills the'll need on their journey, in role that would be well-suited to those thinking of a career in teaching, youth work or outdoor education. Formal training will be given in navigational skills, campcraft, first aid and route planning to all DofE Supervisors.

Anyone who is interested in volunteering as a DofE Expedition Assessor or Supervisor is asked to contact Rebecca Silk at the Youth Commission, either on 756099 or via rebecca.silk@youthcommission.gg.
