Unemployment falls to 300

Tuesday 07 August 2018

Year-on-year unemployment has continued to fall in Guernsey, as only a total of 300 islanders were unemployed at the end of June 2018.

That is a reduction of 21 when compared to the same point in 2017.

Quarterly figures released by the Committee forEmployment & Social Security show that, as well as the year-on-year reduction, the number of jobseekers has seen a small decrease during the first six months of 2018 – from 305 at the end of December to 300 at the end of June.

Deputy Michelle Le Clerc, President of the Committee for Employment & Social Security, said: "Guernsey continues to have low unemployment, which remains a sign of our stable and strong economy.

"Jobs are available across all sectors, with the Job Centre continuing to work hard to both promote roles and also closely liaise with employers to make sure their staffing needs are met. The Job Centre’s website is also showing impressive results, with the number of job adverts promoted more than doubling in the last year."

The quarterly unemployment report also highlighted statistics for the average number of people unemployed throughout the second quarter. This is calculated by averaging out snapshots taken on the last Saturday of each month.

The average number of jobseekers during the second quarter of 2018 stood at 303. This represents an increase of six when compared to the average number between January and March. The average number of jobseekers decreased by 41 during Quarter 2 when compared to the average number of jobseekers for the same period in 2017.

Other stats highlighted include 38 people on training schemes as at the end of June, with 53 islanders having attended short courses run through the Job Centre during the second quarter.
