Two needed to help make parole decisions

Sunday 09 June 2024

The Parole Review Committee needs two people to join its ranks.

It is the independent body that decides whether and how prisoners can be safely released into the community early.

PRC chairman Phil Taylor, said: “The committee plays a vital role in the administration of justice and we are hoping to attract people who can demonstrate good listening skills, who can speak confidently and explain their decision making and reasons reflecting on the evidence.

“They must be prepared to be challenged on their views and be flexible in their approach – no two cases are similar.

“Making these kinds of decisions is not easy, but it is challenging, intellectually stimulating and fulfilling.”

Members are required to read and consider complex information produced by professionals.

Decisions are made in small teams and members are appointed for the qualities and experience they can bring to the role from their own lives.

Applicants must have proven analytic and decision-making skills and have the ability to work as a team by participating in committee meetings and discussions.

Knowledge of criminal justice systems or, experience of conducting risk assessments is desirable.

Previous experience in law, social work, psychology, or another related field would be an asset but is not essential.

Training will be provided.

Anyone interested in spending a few days a month in the voluntary role should send a CV and a covering letter to the Chairman of the Parole Review Committee, c/o Sir Charles Frossard House, La Charroterie, St Peter Port, GY1 1FH, or email to parole@gov.gg

The closing date is 30 June.

Members of the PRC cannot be members of the States of Deliberation, the States of Alderney or Sark Chief Pleas or be currently employed within criminal justice services and must be available to attend meetings in person in Guernsey.
